GIVE THE JITEGEMEE SCHOOL
A PLACE TO GO
In September, A Place To Go team members Mark and Laura traveled to Machakos for the grand opening of the new Jitegemee School campus. In addition to the students, over 100 community members were in attendance for the ribbon cutting and dedication. While the new building wasn’t completely fit-out by then, you can already tell how excited everyone is about the new building. This first phase of construction includes the library, computer lab, classroom, and staff offices. We can’t wait to see them full of books, computers, and students!
Phase two includes the kitchen and our BIOGAS TOILET! While we were there, we met with a local contractor who specializes in building biogas units and determined the final size of the digester chamber. For those interested, the digester tank will be sized at 24 cubic meters and handle the, umm… “output” of 200 students, 100 chickens, and three dairy cows. All that waste will be turned into enough biogas to fuel the new kitchen stoves. And we couldn’t be more excited to report that both the kitchen building and the toilet are now under construction!
Stay tuned for more stories from the trip and updated construction photos! Thanks again to everyone for making this a reality. Potty on!
WE YOU DID IT!

A Game of Thrones Party
Hey, y'all! Come to our party at RTKL DC -- 2101 L Street NW in DC -- on Thursday, October 10th.
A Place to Go is a team of RTKL DC staff currently working to help design and fundraise for the construction of a sustainable biogas toilet block for the Jitegemee School in Machakos, Kenya. Currently two thirds of the way to their $15,000 goal, the team will be hosting the attached happy hour and fundraiser next Thursday evening here at RTKL. We hope you can join us for what promises to be a entertaining event for a great cause. Please click on the invite below to RSVP by October 8th.
That's One Pretty Potty!
The design for the new biogas toilet at Jitegemee is here! Special attention is being paid to the aesthetics of the building to help change the negative perception of toilets and give the students a pleasant environment. The new design uses a floating butterfly roof structure to help capture rainwater, promote natural air ventilation, and provide a covered hand-washing station. The wall construction of the toilet block is made with locally quarried stone blocks within a concrete frame. Unfortunately, the giraffe you see is not part of the design.
Jitegemee Breaks Ground!
Foundations are being dug and construction is set to begin on the new Jitegemee School campus in Machakos, Kenya. Our designer Patrick Willke was in attendance at the official groundbreaking ceremony to see the site dedicated and to hear stories from past and current students. A Place to Go is a volunteer funded effort to build a sustainable toilet for the Jitegemee School in Machakos, Kenya. The team is raising $15,000 to construct a biogas toilet unit that will recycle waste and produce biogas to fuel more efficient stoves in the kitchen. The new toilet will help to save energy, eliminate the need for costly and dirty charcoal, reduce waste, and provide compost for the school garden. The toilet will be an important part of the new sustainable Jitegmee campus.
